Ten Minute Artist Weekly Rounds up the week’s daily prompts along with a few interesting finds of the week. It’s perfect catching up on any prompts you missed or if you prefer an hour of art making on the weekend rather than 10 minutes a day. You choose to receive daily and/or weekly editions here.
This Week…
I introduced you to the P.A.C.T (Place, Animal, Character, Thing) framework, and challenged you to use if for 7 days! Then for the rest of the week I shared ideas on how to tackle each of the four subjects. Feel free to jump into the challange anytime!
MONDAY: Start Drawing P.A.C.T Challenge: We kicked off the challenge using constraints to beat the blank page and draw alongside art buddies.
TUESDAY: 3 Steps to Drawing More Interesting Scenes, Locations, and Places: Selecting an area of scale, picking a purpose, and framing the view.
WEDNESDAY: One Thing to Think About When Drawing Animals: Giving creatures human expressions, relatable eyes, and believable gestures to bring them to life.
THURSDAY: Two Ways to Draw Characters: Moving between observation mode to download information and imagination mode to create memorable figures.
FRIDAY: Drawing Things : Completing the P.A.C.T with everyday objects and icons, stripping away needless decoration so every mark serves an intention.
If you try any of the prompts, you can share them here in the chat gallery.
You’re Reading the Weekly Edition. If you want to receive the Daily Editions you can toggle them on here.
Last week we had Mr. Tom Froese as a guest teacher on ArtGym sharing his idea of two drawing modes, this was a key idea that completely fast tracked my drawing process. You can check it out here
Coming up…
I’m hosting a FREE draw along and Q&A about Drawing Picture Stories, my retreat in Portugal in March 2027. Joining me on the Zoom is Sofia Ramos (venue host) to answer any questions about the location, logistics and experience of being in Monsaraz, Portugal. While I answer questions about what you are going to get out of the workshops as well as more general questions about what I’ve learned about illustration that has enabled me to work illustrating Children’s books for the past 5 years all — while drawing a Place, Animal, Character and Thing from the location!
🇵🇹 Join us for a retreat to Portugal in March , Where we’ll spend 5 days together making art and new artist friends!
Lastly…
Here are some of the things I noticed on substack this week.
Carolyn Yoo shares what she learned about delighting audiences from her trip to Asia.
Bone folder press got a realisation that intellectualising is draining your creativity, ps she has a free zine for ten minutes of creativity.
And
Greg Wheeler shares a 15 minute pocket notebook routine.
Thanks for reading Ten Minute Artist - Daily Creative Joy! This post is public so feel free to share it.
This week I was thinking a lot about how to get as much of those important things into the day as possible. Like minutes of drawing. I embodied that thinking by doing 100 pushups a day… throughout the day.
Like 10 when I get in the studio, another 10 an hour later, 20 before lunch and so on, some times I was getting 5 or 6 in at a time.. I marked them all down on my diary, and forced myself to hundred before sleep most days.
I felt it was a useful exercise in training the mind to go through the pain and boredom that sometimes comes with doing the things we care about.
