This week we’re using the Drawing P.A.C.T Framework, to get you drawing quickly instead of staring at a blank page. That is draw a Place, Animal, Character and Thing. By picking 4 subjects instead of 1 you occupy the inner critic, and instead of creating a perfect subject, you are in the act of creating.
You’re reading the Daily Edition of Ten Minute Artist, if you prefer getting Weekly Editions you can adjust your setting here.
On drawing animals…
Of the almost 20 books I’ve illustrated, every one features either an animal or monster. The exception being the biography of Lionel Messi. In all those books I treat animals and even monsters the same way, and that is to make them seem human like.
The way I do this is by shooting an expression, pose or gesture that is unmistakenly human.
With poses and gestures I try to pose the animal in a post that a human could conceivably do… there is a book by Eric Carle called ‘From Head to Toe’ where he explores this idea in great detail.
With expressions, simply drawing animals with human eyes go a long way to making them more relatable. We naturally draw animals with humans as a reference, lean into it.
Draw an animal or do the entire drawing P.A.C.T and share your work here.
