This week we’re using the Drawing P.A.C.T Framework, to get you drawing quickly instead of staring at a blank page. That is draw a Place, Animal, Character and Thing. By picking 4 subjects instead of 1 you occupy the inner critic, and instead of creating a perfect subject, you are in the act of creating.
You’re reading the Daily Edition of Ten Minute Artist, if you prefer getting Weekly Editions you can adjust your setting here.
Here are 3 steps to drawing more interesting places
Select a place
Choose a purpose
Create the most interesting view
Select a place.
When selecting a place you are choosing not just a point in the universe you are choosing an area of focus. Space is an example of a place and so is a mouse hole, the choice of place determines the level of detail of the subjects withing the place, the view from a tower might involve drawing tiny people, the view from a cafe may involve drawing pastries and the view from space will involve drawing icons and symbols of planets and stars. Recognise the options of scale available nad try to select thorn a variety of scales, each will give you a different drawing challenge.
Pick a purpose.
The purpose of a drawing is often to educate or entertain. Imagine that instead of drawing you were saying a sentence. For example when drawing a food truck you could say.
This is a food truck
Food trucks are boxes on wheels
I once saw a food truck that sold nothing but designer dogfood
This is a type of food truck. And this is the type of patron it attracts.
If a monkey had a food truck I wonder what they would sell.
Hmmm.what does a food truck even look like, I wonder if I can draw one from memory
Pick your own purpose, it will make for a more personal and meaningful drawing
Get the most interesting view.
On your purpose try to capture the place from the most interesting point of view.
Consider a few options and select the best one, here are a few to consider; eye level, child’s eye level, from the front, side, back… a bird’s eye view, a worms eye view, from inside or outside or as an icon or symbol
Draw a place or do the entire drawing P.A.C.T and share your work here.
