This week we’re using the Drawing P.A.C.T Framework, to get you drawing quickly instead of staring at a blank page. That is draw a Place, Animal, Character and Thing. By picking 4 subjects instead of 1 you occupy the inner critic, and instead of creating a perfect subject, you are in the act of creating.
You’re reading the Daily Edition of Ten Minute Artist, if you prefer getting Weekly Editions you can adjust your setting here.
On drawing characters…
There are two ways to use the character portion of this exercise.
The first is to do imitate the way an artist makes a particular piece of work. This is seeing through their eyes. The work you are looking at is the results of hundreds or thousands of past choices, they hold in them a particular wisdom. Copying helps you encounter that wisdom.
The second is to do your own take on the character. Sometimes this might means a change of medium or drawing style. It could also mean a change of sensibility or a focus on a different attribute. For example you might portray an old batman, as wise but frail, or an energetic and niece younger version.
You might even create a kid friendly version with softer versions of familiar themes.
This is Symbie, it’s the preschool version on Venom in the Spider-Man universe, I thought it was an amazing take on the character. Created by Disney for Spidey and Friends, the preschool audience version of Spider-Man.
