The Importance of Making Art Daily.
Drawing taps into the source of our creativity and draws it out and serves as a record of our ideas and observations.
Ideas are not available on demand, unless you’ve built a reservoir of them in advance you will struggle when you need them. This daily practice will let you experience the joy of creating daily and build a library of ideas as well as develop your ability to perceive with your eyes. It will also make visible the secret things that are inside you.
This habit is just as useful for people who draw for the pure joy of creating as it is for working professionals to develop their personal vision of their art.
My Story
I knew I wanted to be an illustrator at 11.
I even went to art school. But I spent two decades, first, trying to make a living as an artist, and then just trying to make a living. I had for years forgotten that I was an artist. And I had forgotten my childhood ambition
It’s only when I started spending a few moments each day drawing, that a path opened up for me, to sign my first book deal, get an agent, and now illustrate books for a living.
Even as a working illustrator, this ten minute habit is a vital part of my practice.
You are what you repeatedly do, so if you want to be an artist, all you need to do is make art daily.
That may lead to book deals or it might just be a way to process all the chaos of the day into something personal and often beautiful.
