Thank you Kelcey, it’s just accruing to me how significant this illustration has been for me, I used it in my first #kidlitart postcard, it got retweeted by Adam Rutherford (who I now have an award winning book with) and he tagged a number of agents in it, my caption was asking to be represented, my would be agent responded to this post and offered me representation. My journey begun with this piece:) There is this kind of power in visuals. Or maybe it’s coincidence.
Definitely competing priorities! I draw most every day. But it's generally to reach a very specific end. I would love to start a 30-minute/day sketch time, but I always push it off until this project or that project is completed. Inevitably, there's always another project around the corner. So...I haven't made it a habit.
You could use the prompts I send out every day or write some of your own. Purpose is hard, maybe when you understand the benefits that can be a motivation.
Creating daily this past year has been a total game changer for me.
Would recommend this to almost anyone.
Your work is amazing, what made you decide to do it daily? How did you overcome the obstacles?
I can’t actually remember what my main motivation was, but I know that a desire to improve my skills definitely played a role.
One thing that kept me on track was the accountability of building in public.
Sharing my work online and building an audience who expected to see my posts daily — and the potential of letting all that hard work go to waste.
I just want to say that I LOVE your illustration so much!

Amazing story, Adam!

Hi Kara, what if you did 10 minutes instead of 30 as a goal?
For me, a start button.
I wonder what a metaphorical start button would look like!
Very interesting and encouraging writeup on starting a habit of creation every day.
Thank you Chidanandare you starting something?
