I do like to write on the back pages and draw on the front pages.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your post, which I really liked. Do you select 3 materials and use them for a time, ie a week. Or do you pick a different 3 materials every day?

Hi Antonia, I swap if I think it can be improved and stick if I find 3 I like!

Adam I just love the way you simplify this…I keep meaning to add notes to my sketchbook and never do. The most I add is the colours I use but even then I get carried away in the painting and forget to add notes. I am so glad I came across your post 😁

Love everything about this, Adam! Especially annotating your drawing experiments on one page next to the drawing. It feels like a real laboratory! The three materials challenge is so smart, too. Coming from graphic design we know that creativity requires constraints, so this is a great way to spark ideas through limitation. I read recently that decision-making takes up the most energy in the brain. So the less decisions the brain has to make (like choosing materials), the more room it has for actual creative work!

Thank You Anny!

It’s so true about decision making.

This challenge can be about batching the decisions on materials, so that when it’s time to sketch, you already have things set up!

Really love this idea, annotating each drawing!! Helps instill learning from each attempt....what you like what you want to try next time or do different, plus noting colors combos or material combos you like as well as what didnt work and learning from each sketch. I was only able to do 3 sketches this week so I am going to try to catch up and keep up. I am changing up my 3 supplies every day. ( I am trying to include at least one supply I dont normally use. Trying different combos of materials and colors. I think next week I want to try making textures on the note page with supplies first experiment with textures etc. You are always inspirational Adam thank you!

How did it go?

I recently returned from an international trip where I purposely did not buy a cell plan - I could only use my phone when I had the free WiFi. No surprise but honestly also shocking(?) I took notes and drew so much more in my journal. It was SO FUN and liberating. I sent a subway watercolor sketch to a friend and didn't apologize for "how bad it was" or any of that nonsense :)

Adam, this is so fantastic! I especially love your “bad birds”. I’m very tempted to join the challenge, the lack of any extra time has stopped me so far but could I catch up over the weekend??? This has certainly made me re-consider. I know I’d learn so much from taking part and playing along.
