Start where you are.
The only place to start is where you are.
But that’s not as easy as it sounds. Having everything you need can be just as limiting as not having enough. To start where you are, you have to be really conscious of where you are.
Who you are.
We all carry so many labels play so many roles, more often then not that bleeds in to who we think we are as artist. We become influenced by influencers telling us when to post what and which platforms to be on and what we need to do there.
Some of that can be helpful. But that’s not where we start.
The place to start is knowing what we love, knowing what we want to see more of in the world, what we want to share. Ant that doesn’t come out in a perfectly formed artist statement.
It seeps out daily, and that’s what the daily prompts are for, they are a permission slip to allow you to dig, and break down the wall that are separating you from what you love. From what needs to be created through you.
We are going to find that creative spark that’s inside of you and amplify it. Let’s get to work.
TEN MINUTE ARTIST PROMPT
Who are you?
Find a picture of yourself as a kid. Or draw one, pick a very specific time and age.
Place it in your Artist Book.
Now imagine you were a perfect parent. Around the image of mini you write every kind of positive affirmation you ca think of. Draw the words, stick things, and collage. Be corny if you need to be. Cry if you need to. Put all the love you can into that spread. Love is like muscle, it gets stronger with use.
Work for 10 minutes (you can spend more time if you want to, but you’re equally free to come to an abrupt stop)
More notes on the practice:
All the prompts are repeatable, and customisable, use them as they are or adjust for inspiration and save them up for future use.
The main tool we use for our practice is an artist book that we will sit with for 10 minutes daily. ( but any sketchbook or journal works too)
It’s not to late to start a daily creative habit, if you want to dip in for the month you can binge on the Monthly Pass for $20 or you can join us for the year for $100 (which works out to 8.33 a month)
PS: If you like this post would you forward it to a friend?
Happy new year Adam!
Thank you for this heartfelt prompt. It was quite emotional, felt a little choked up actually 😅. From this exercise,I learnt that all the things that were missing in my childhood, I am actually giving to my daughter; Words of affirmation, lots of quality time with her, apologising after losing my patience. I’m not perfect but I’m healing some generational trauma bit by bit. Hopefully ❤️
Thanks Adam! I've been reading your prompts for a while now, but haven't got as far as actually doing them 🫣. One of the things I like about them is that there is lots of space to be me, while having a framework to work to. I'm working on implementing the 10min sketchbook practice into my day this year. Thank you for your thoughtful articles, let's do this!
