I’m addicted to picture books and I don’t have any Littles. 😊. I am not an artist but I still want to write a picture book. (That’s the poet in me). I wrote a poem for one once, I lost the draft, I’m trying to reconstruct it from memory…

Rosemary, no need to “reconstruct” it. Take the essence of what you had in mind, and rather than thinking of it as a manuscript, do a fast free-write of what appears. No judgment. Just follow, then see what’s there later. It’s too easy to stop yourself. You’ll find it. And maybe it’s a poem, or maybe it’s your own poetic prose. Oh, and I had lots of picture books long before I had kids!

Thanks, good idea. It had a certain rhythm to it, and I remember the refrain. And in my head I remember the pictures I wanted to go with it… but no, it won’t be what it was but I definitely have the germ. And I liked it otherwise I wouldn’t have remembered it.

How do you audition for a book?

Sometimes publishers ask you to do a ‘sample’ it’s paid work, for a small portion of the book, in this case it was a character design, if you do get the job, you get paid for the job rather than the sample.
