Hi I’m Picturebook illustrator Adam Ming, and you’re reading Ten Minute Artist. Each week, I give you a sketchbook project that you can complete in as little as ten minutes a day. Listen to my conversation with Anny Chen about the value of a Ten Minute Practice, and get your Starter Kit here.
This is a page out of a book I illustrated called Does a Monkey Get Grumpy?1
As we get close to the middle of the year, I thought it would be a good time to check in on our feelings. So that’s the theme for this week’s Sketchbook Project. There are a few ways you could do this.
First off, write a list of feelings, one for each day.
Make a sketch based on the feeling.
This can be interpreted very broadly.
You could draw a character having the feeling.
You could do an abstract drawing to express a feeling
You could letter the word for what you’re feeling in a way that mirrors the feeling.
You could draw a still life, an object, or a scene.
You could create a colour palette to describe the feeling
You could make a journal entry about your feeling.

We recently did do a drawing workshop focusing on emotions on
with and myself, paid subscribers can watch a recording of that and draw along here.I’ve decided to start plugging my books in the newsletters. Keeping it real, I do not enjoy doing the typical author/illustrator marketing stuff like book signings and school visits but I do enjoy writing this newsletter, so if you’re looking for a book for a kid, student, or library, consider picking up one of the ones I’ve worked on.
