What’s your strategy as an aspiring illustrator?
Book a 1-1 Portfolio Strategy Call with Adam Ming : You will leave the call energised and filled with clarity, purpose and strategy
In 2021 I had spend thousands on expensive courses, and hundreds of hours building my portfolio, I had worked through lists of tasks recommended by potential agents, but it felt I was no closer to my goal of being a published illustrator.
The courses were great, and I enjoyed building a portfolio, but something was lacking, and I had no way of figuring out what that was. All the general advice lead me to a dead end, and I felt the only way forward was to get some specific advice from someone who was in the position I wanted to be in and could see around the corners that were opaque to me. I spent months reaching out and trying to get the opportunity to get advice from people in the industry.
Sometimes it costs me the price of a beer, other times it costs me a conference ticket, and many times through persistence and patience and a keen eye for opportunity it just cost me time, and waking up at 2am in the morning for a zoom call.
In the end, it was that specific knowledge from someone in the industry that helped me fill the gaps and get me over the line.
Since then I’ve illustrated more than 15 books for top publishers, won illustration awards, and have not had a single day in 5 years that I didn’t have a book project ahead of me. As I was doing that, I’ve turned every publishing professional I’ve worked with into a kind of mentor and guide, learning from those more experienced than I am.
But there is one thing that brings me more satisfaction than all that, and that has being able to help others close that final gap by sharing that information that I’ve collected through those meetings and through my own experience.
I knew I wanted to be an illustrator when I was 11, it finally happened for me when I turned 40.
Let me save you some time.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been donating three 1-1 sessions every month and they always book up within minutes. I wanted to find a way to help more people, which is why I’m reintroducing 1-1 Portfolio Strategy Calls as a paid service.
Here’s what the last person I spoke to said:
“Adam was prepared, thorough and thoughtful.
He offered smart and strategic career advice that was specific to me. I was so impressed by how much value he packed into a single 30-minute session. I went from stuck and uncertain to excited and confident. I left the session with clear, actionable steps that I can take to move my work forward. I would highly recommend a portfolio chat with Adam to anyone looking for guidance in their illustration career.”

I wanted to charge $150 a session, because I believe it’s worth at least ten times that, and it’s definitely cost me more than ten times that. But I also want to make it affordable to the people who really need it.
I asked my wife for advice and we agreed that $80 would be a good number.
My goal is to help you get to the front of the line when someone is thinking of hiring an illustrator with your specific talents and I have the strategies to help you do that.
Over the years I’ve helped dozens of people adjust their strategies and as a result get agents and publishing deals and often between weeks and months.
Now I cannot guarantee that will be your experience.
But I can almost guarantee that you will leave the call, energized, hopeful, and with a clear purposeful strategy about the way ahead. And if we’ve already had a call before and you’d like to do it again, I’d like to welcome you to book a call as well.
