I have a chunk of time and I’m in a pretty good state, I’ve cleared my big deadline illustrating an 48 page nonfiction book for kids and I’m excited about what’s next.
And I’ve noticed that this leaves me in a place of possibility.
I watched my thoughts:
What should I do next?
What do I want to do?
Will it work?
I fall on one idea and doubt myself and start the whole process again…
I stop myself.
Enough!
I know what I want, I know what I want to do to try and get it, and I don’t know if it will work. Do you know how I will know? I have to try it, or I have to try something. So rather then spend the 3 or 4 hours that I have thinking in circles, or ‘researching’ looking for some sure path to success.
I am going to take imperfect action. And I invite you to do the same:
Ten Minute Artist Weekend Prompt
Take Imperfect Action
Take out your Artist Journal and write down these questions:
What is the one thing that wants to be created through you?
If you knew it couldn’t fail how would you start?
Do the first step.
Done? What’s the next step?
Do that.
Repeat until you succeed, change your approach if you need to, keep moving in that direction.
My imperfect action
So the thing I’m thinking about is how can I create more value for you.
Last year I grew to understand that writing a newsletter is an act of service. And I figured out how I’m best able to serve you, and that is by helping you start and maintain this ritual of spending then minutes a day in you Artist Journal.
Because I know that so much of your wellbeing and growth will come out from that and the compound effect of that will give you and the people around you a rich life. I don’t mean money, but maybe you will find that too.
So my question for myself is how is how can I serve you better?
I wrote a note earlier today saying that I’ve written 1000 posts on substack and maybe 20 of them were good. And that’s the only way I know how to write 20 good posts (imperfect action)
But my focus then went to the 20 good posts, and all those posts are about something that I struggled with once and no longer struggle with or found success in an area.
How can I help you find similar success?
And what I came up with at the top of my mind is workbooks for each of the areas, tools to help you find your answers, a concentration of prompts.
Workbooks that will help you figure out, how to:
Start | Advertise | Take Time | Tell Stories | Take Notes | Make Habits |Raise Energy | Make Friends | Use Frameworks | Feel All the Things | Use What You Have | Lace Up And Go Out
… How to be an Artist
I don’t want to tell you how to be an artist. I want to help you answer that question for yourself.
So my imperfect action is to write that first work book, and I’m going to do that now.
I’m that guy…
That guy who is going to challenge you to go on your hero’s journey as an artist and just take one step away from ordinary life, and then another, and another until the people around you don’t recognise who you are.
But deep inside you know that’s how you’ve always seen yourself.
If you’re not subscribed yet, I’d like to invite you to do so now, so that I will be able to reach you with all the tools and insights and go with you daily on this journey.
Brilliant Adam, as always x
Love it! Thanks for encouraging us all to move forward.
I've also heard it referred to as "taking messy action."
