16: How to instantly increase your mental capacity by adopting this reframe.
"Your body is your brain” - Scott Adams
You’re Reading Adam Ming’s Daily Blog, This month I’m writing a series about taking time for your creative practice. Each post, includes an invitation to spend ten minutes developing your creative practice.
I’m doing this in October to complement any Drawing challenge you might be doing. I will be doing the classic inktober.

Scott Adams, the now self proclaimed disgraced cartoonist (I’m not going to go into the politics of that), Dilbert Creator and Author says, that you should never take any advice from a cartoonist.
But if you did, this reframe is a useful one:
“Your Body is your Brain”
This has a couple of implications, the first is, that you should pay attention to all your ideas, whether the arise from your mind, your skin, your heart and even your gut. In fact one of the ways you can know an idea is funny is when your whole body feels it.
When designing characters, I like to draw sketches until one of them makes me laugh from. The feedback from your body is often just as useful or maybe even more useful than your head.
The second implication is, if you want to improve the efficacy of your brain, you need to take care of your body. Sleep, eat right, exercise, shower, drink water and have good posture, all the good stuff.
Right now, I’m struggling to write.
My fingers are fine so typing is a breeze.
And my mind is fine, I had a good rest and over all positive thoughts in my head.
But my back aches like a *&%$#@%$!(*&^
You see I normally stand when I work, it makes work 20% slower but overall and in the long run it’s better in every way. However because I was on a tight deadline, I needed the 20%, so sat on a stool and slouched over and held that position drawing for 2 full working days.
This had 2 outcomes,
A very happy client.
And a very sore back* (read ‘brain’)
This makes writing very difficult.
So remember kids, if you want to think pain free and make quality decisions, take care of your body.
One way to remember to do this is to think of your body as your brain.
10 Minute Invitation
Look at the space you use to work, what is one way you can improve it for your body?
What did you come up with?
The inktober theme for the day is grungy. When I’m lost for what to draw one trick i use is to draw the word itself. Like so.
And with that, I’m going back to lie on my yoga ball (the small one) and rock side to side and up and down, which helps relive the pain. But you shouldn’t take health advice from a picture-book illustrator.
