Potted Plants Sketchbook Project
Consider the relationships between plants and their humans
Let’s start this week by shouting out some of the work from recent galleries, from left to right
and it’s been such a joy building this sketchbook habit with this community! This week we’re drawing potted plants.
I was walking down the street the other day and I saw a huge tree coming out of a pot that seemed way too small for it. What’s interesting about potted plants in particular is that they represent a relationship between humans and nature.
When you sketch your potted plant, consider writing a short caption about the relationship between the plant and it’s owner. This might be a true or imaginary story based on the appearance of the plant and it’s pot.
Sketchbook Project:
Draw a plant in a pot for each day of the week. Write a caption to go with it.
Here are some ideas on how to go about it.
Draw 7 plants and 7 pots then combine them together later. This could involve drawing or painting on paper and cutting and pasting into your sketchbook.
Draw plants from your neighbourhood from life. Or take a photo or mental snapshot to draw later.
Draw the same plant in different pots.
Draw the same pot with different plants.
Research interesting pots, then find a suitable plant to fit it and draw them.
Research interesting plants then find a suitable pot to match it and draw them.
Draw a potted plant that you owned or purchased before.
Consider a plant in the wild, how would it look in a pot, draw it.

PS: Most pots are cylinders, and this week’s project is great practice for drawing cylinders, if you need some basics or some refreshers, this video might help.
You could also buy my books for the little ones in your life. Happy Drawing!

I gave my monstera, Ffranc, a bigger pot this week. This means, as the largest plant in the house, his old pot now becomes free for the next largest... and so we have ever switching plants and pots as they grow 💚
Oooh speaking of plants, how's Roger doing?!
