My mom thought me how to mix paint

Red, white and a bit of yellow.

I remember art class in school in primary two. All the kids had the same type of cheap ‘poster colors’. Cheap for an artist, but expensive for a primary two kid.

This was the second year in a row we were asked to paint a beach scene. I told the teacher that we don’t have a color for the skin.

She told me to paint the people orange. I told her that people are not orange. That may be the only conversation I had with that art teacher.

I shipped my scene without people and got low marks. I always got low marks for art in school, even though I tried hard.

I must have told my mom this story. And I remember her showing me how to mix paint.

Red, White and a bit of yellow, she would tell me as she demonstrated… and just like that, a new color. To me it may as well have been magic!

Not wanting to paint orange people was probably my biggest stressor as an 8 year old. And my mom solved it, like magic, in a few minutes.

That was probably the first time I felt in awe of my mom. I still feel the same way.
