Illustrators, consistency and competence within your style is critically important because the goal is not to simply craft a compelling image, the goal is to craft a compelling universe.
Brian LaRossa
I’m still brooding on this idea.
The goal is to craft a compelling universe, but where to start? If I were to someday teach a class on how to do this, I might ask the students to imagine themselves on a desert island. But not just themselves, an avatar of themselves. A character they work play.
Then answer some questions.
What type of tree is on the island?
What did you bring with you to the island?
How did you get there?
Is your goal to fortify your position?
Or to escape?
Where will you escape to?
Your island is a small part of the universe you’ve created!
What are some other questions you might ask?
