Life changing improvement in 10 minute increments.
I write about incremental improvement from the perspective of a picturebook illustrator.
I’m a creative, but I’m also a business, a marketeer, a writer/publisher (of this substack) and beyond that, a husband and a father of a toddler. I write about improvements in all these areas, but from the angle of how it impacts the creative practice.
And I write in a page-a-day format. You can choose to get these in your inbox everyday or weekly. Each page comes with a prompt that will help you improve your practice in just 10 minutes.
I never knew if I could make it as an illustrator…
As I turned 40 in 2021 I remembered my childhood dream of becoming an illustrator.
I had done creative work in my startup and for clients. But I was not building a a career as an illustrator. I knew that if I didn’t put in some daily effort, I would be 50 and regret wasting another decade.
I decided that I would just make illustrations daily, I would try to fulfil this childhood dream and I would give myself a decade to do it.
But…
In 2024, I’m way ahead of schedule as I work on my 11th, and 12th book, my first book won a book of a year award and is nominated for another.
3 years in, illustration still feels like a risky business, but working everyday greatly lowers the risk.
I had to adopt so many new mindsets in my transition to becoming a fulltime illustrator and writing them down has helped me keep them top of mind and help me understand my job as a creative.
Which is to have a practice.
Ten Minute Artist is about having a practice.
