I’ve been busy illustrations this week.
I’m working on a book about a sports hero. It’s fun but it’s slow going. I didn’t do much illustrating last month so maybe it’s slow going getting into a flow. My metaphor for illustrating is professional football.
Some of you call it soccer.
The illustrating is match day. The rest of it is training or down time. Unlike professional sport the match days do sneak up on you. This particular piece of work was with the publisher for 6 weeks accumulating the various bits of feedback and approvals needed to take the roughs to colours.
Then suddenly it was approved, and I needed to jump into match day. Or match week!
I feel a bit sluggish and like I’m getting up to speed.
Like in sport some day’s feel like you’re on your game. I feel like I’ve survived the match. But I am excited. That it’s the weekend and I have a new week to go again.
Sometimes ‘match day’ is just about getting through it.
PS; Though, I had a good week in one sense, I might have already mentioned this. I decided to be more present for my wife and kid. This doesn’t take more time, though it does take decision making, focus and well, presence.
Meaning when my kid wants to come in and sit next to me and draw while I work, that’s what we do. And if she wants me to read her stories, that’s what we do too.
It means doing the bedtime stuff when my wife’s fallen asleep, or having extra patience during meals to listen and have 4 year old conversations. And they were great conversations.
My favourite thing she said this week, “don’t say umm.. um.. talk.”
