On Habits and Routines
According to the book, The Power of full engagement.
There are 4 types of energy.
Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual.
When I was working at the startup, I used to track my energy.
It might look something like this:
4.30 am - P:4 M:3 E:5 S:2
7.30 am - P:4 M:4 E:4 S:4
1 pm - P:2 M:1 E:5 S:3
I did this so that I could map tasks to the type of energy I had. Or raise the level of a particular kind of energy that was lacking.
When my energy levels are high, I look to do difficult creative work.
When some energy levels are low, I can lean into the high levels.
For example, when Physically or Mentally drained, I can lean on the Spiritual, that sense of purpose, and pull through.
When I’m Emotionally drained but Mentally high, I can reason my way to do one small step at a time.
I’ve broken down some advice from Neil Gaiman and uses it as my primary means of keeping my energy levels topped off.
When you’re sleepy, sleep.
When you’re hungry, eat.
And if both of these are satisfied and you still feel in a funk go for a long walk.
