“The washing machine of intellectual property.”
One way to think about AI is as the washing machine of intellectual property. In a sense the whole idea of “Stealing like an artist” is what these AI art machines like Dall.E and midjourney do! And they can do it so well people are starting to ask:
Why make art at all, if machines can make art?
What’s your response to that?
“Just because a robot can speak, doesn’t mean we have to stop talking”
Art survived the Camera. Chess Survived Deep Blue. In fact both are thriving. Chess is a great example because it has been disrupted by Ai, with the turning point being Deep Blue beating World Champian Chess Grandmaster Gary Kasparov in 1997
Gary has gone on to become an ambassador for how working with AI is a better idea than arguing about which is better.
This video forms a good basis for starting a conversation about Art and AI.
My own thought is that it’s important to get into the conversation about AI and how it will affect everything we do. Maybe even come up with some hypothesis and see how things play out vs your guess.
PS. If you do think about these things, I recommend spending a limited time thinking about the possible negative outcomes and more time thinking about potential positive outcomes and uses.
Some things I wrote last week:
Last weeks notes were shorter than usual, they were also well received, here are a few.
Folktale week, remembered stories of forgotten people.
Today is the first day of Folktale Week! An internet art challenge of particular importance to Children’s book illustrators due to the fact that, childrens books grew out of the tradition of folktales. Katie Stack who writes
told me that there are only 50 or so folktales, everything else is the same story with different characters.Every Monday, I share something extra for paid subscribers. Today I’ll be sharing my process for doing folktale week and how it adds to a book project I’m working on rather than take away from it.
