The building blocks of illustrations are icons.

I think of icons like pieces on a chess board, each strategically placed and working together, to tell a story.

Here Are some examples.

When making a painting one might focus on shape, color, edges etc to make up an image. When making an illustration, the focus is often on icons. The point is that each particular unit of drawing is readable.

Think of icons like words and an illustration like a sentence.
