Build an idea library.
Show up for yourself for 10 minutes a day.
Find a clear surface, like a section of a desk. I don’t know… I find a clear surface conducive for ideas. Make it a ritual to show up daily. The showing up daily part is important.
Everyday, our consciousness can only hold so many ideas.
As we carry around hopes, fears, and a tool is in our head, they bump around and all that bumping sometimes produces a spark. Having a daily practice even if it’s only for 10 minutes is a great way to collect your daily sparks.
It’s these sparks that would become the seeds for your best work.
I wrote a story and co-hosted a writing retreat over the weekend. Both the story and retreat grew out of many sparks collected over years.
It’s easy to collect sparks, but if you miss it you can’t get back missed days.
I use these 4 questions to collect sparks:
What did I do yesterday?
What am I working on?
What’s coming up?
What am I grateful for?
The answers to these change daily, making it a great way to catch your sparks.
You could write these down as 4 lines.
Or draw four icons.
And my favourite, draw as a comic strip.
Sprinkle your sparks into your illustrations to give them that extra personal quality.
