I was almost 40 when I realised the importance of drawing poses. Slow learner.
Here’s why it’s so important.
Visual Storytelling: Understanding poses enables you to communicate emotions and actions in drawings.
Believability: Learning how to draw various poses helps to create characters that move and interact in realistic and convincing ways, adding depth to the artwork.
Observation Skills: Focusing on poses can sharpen our observational skills as artists, helping us to notice subtle details in how people express themselves through body language.
Versatility: Mastery of drawing different poses allows artists to tackle a range of subjects and scenes, from dynamic action sequences to quiet, emotional moments.
Anatomy: Understanding poses involves a grasp of basic anatomy, which can improve storytelling when drawing human or animal characters.
Setting the scene: Engaging and believable poses allow the character to exist within complex compositions and to interact with other characters.

Art Gym News
When Katie and I started thinking about ART GYM at the start of 2024, we decided to do 6 workshops, and see how it goes.
And it’s going well! Each workshop feels like it’s better than the last, it’s more fun for us and our fellow GYM mates tell us they are loving it too. So we’ve decided to Make ART GYM it’s own Substack and keep going after June. (More soon)
Here’s an offer, if you are an active annual subscriber of this substack or through June 30th you will get an additional free 6-month subscription to the new ArtGYM substack featuring 6 new workshops for FREE!
Subscribe now to sign up for this month’s workshop and consider getting that annual subscription.
Art gym is a group workout for your creative practice! By meeting together we provide each other accountability to start and finish practice sessions that level up your skills. Lets level up our drawing skills together at Art Gym!
