10 Minutes of Art Making. Starting from a blank page.
Take 10 minutes to make something on a busy day. The Artist Habit
It’s a particularly busy period for me. I’m working on a few projects. Taking classes. Raising a Kid. I have one book just out, and another coming out in a few days. It’s a lot!
But I’ve a habit of being an artist. To make something from nothing without client or deadline. And so, I clear 10 minutes and my desk and get to work.
Alas, As I have no current art project to work on, I’m going to have to start from scratch, here’s how I do it.
Inspiration, I keep a few inspiring coffee-table books close at hand. So I pick one up and flip through it and watch what catches my eye, follow my interest, take notes.
Question: What would I like to work on, I ask myself, as so many times before, the answere that comes up is to make a comic.
How: I make a list of approaches I could take to make a comic strip. The one I pick is to start with some free writing. I end up with a paragraph. I mine it for what’s interesting.
Make: Now I set out to make 4 sentences, based on what I have written. The four sentences are the output of my 10 Minute Artist Session. It’s the product, the art.
In the next session, I will draw those 4 sentences as a comic strip.
You need to build a habit of being an artist.
You need to have a way to get started and end each session with a product no matter how small.
“Small steps in the direction, are better than big steps in the wrong one”.
Assignment:
In the comments, share how you get started with an artist session.
