067: A Letter
About little steps and finding the path…
Today’s Newsletter is going to be a little more like a letter. And I’m sending it early because some one needs to read it right now, maybe it’s you….
After two days of late nights (12.30 am, 2am) with my toddler, I’m happy to report that she was in bed at 8.30.
It’s 11.30 PM as I’m writing this from my studio at home, which sounds fancy, but really all it is is a converted spare room. It’s tiny. And by converted I mean I declared it to be a studio, and that was it!
I’m feeling an enormous amount of gratitude to be doing what I’m doing. Which is working on 3 books at once. By at once I mean that I’m working on the roughs of one currently and am sending that off tomorrow. Then I’ll be working on the finals for another and when I send that in I’ll be revising roughs for a third.
All three projects are moving along nicely, and the amazing people I’m working with seem as happy working with me as I feel blessed to be working with them!
At the same time I have two books that are done and scheduled to come out later this year. And one book that’s already out there.
And I’ve already gotten an advance for the book I’ll be starting next, and a couple of books are being negotiated beyond that.
At this time 3 years ago…
I was praying for a baby and thinking that I should pick a style and market for my art, and learn how to turn that into a job.
Writing every day has helped me stay on a very clear path, and it’s really important to stay on a path if you’re trying to get somewhere. If you’re not on the path that feels made for you, I urge you to turn yourself in the general direction and keep walking. You will find it, and when you do find it, try to stay on it.
Don’t drop everything to ‘follow your dream’ that’s not what I’m saying.
What I am saying is there are little things you can do instead of feeling bad on instagram or picking fights on twitter or doing what ever it is people do on TikTok and the rest of it.. little things.
And you know exactly what those little things are.
Those little steps.
Take those little steps. Today.
And tomorrow you will know what the next little steps are.

I definitely was thinking about this very thing! I ended 2022 taking those little steps and making progress and was certain that 2023 would continue with that but it’s been a very difficult start, with my love for illustration being really dampened by social media. I’m interested in the “job” of illustration and want social media to be only peripheral. Ill be thinking of ways to make it so. Thanks Adam, definitely timely!
as i sit here at 11:30pm exhausted from dealing with my toddlers being sick for the last couple of days. and thinking that i haven’t even started to check off the endless to-dos i promised myself i would tackle this week. i-- i’ve been wrestling with feeling aimless. or maybe i’m just trying to stay above water. i don’t know. i guess my point is... i needed to read this tonight. little steps. thanks adam!
