Do Professional Work For Yourself
Ten Minute Artist is about one thing. One Question.
What would happen if you picked one goal, and spent ten minutes on it every day?
Well first, you’ll get really good at spending 10 minutes, and that ability to focus first of all allows you to call yourself the thing. You’re an artist because you make art every day for 10 minutes… at the very least you are a ten minute artist.
This will give you the confidence to eventually spend more than ten minutes, maybe you’ll do 20. And if you handle the second block of time the same way you handle the third you’ve accelerated your journey.
Soon you’l; be spending 1,2,3,4 hours a day on your practice, people like to call it their personal work. I don’t like that term. How about professional self initiated project. See hoe that changes how you do things.
And if you’re responsible with your own projects and people like the outcomes, they might ask you to do it for them.
Illustrations is a kind of job where you do you, for them.
The first step is to do you for you.
That’s what Ten Minute Artist is about, it’s about spending at least 10 minutes a day, doing you, for you.
Sketchbook Prompt: Draw a fox in space
This was inspired by Richard Scarry’s Planes and rockets and things that fly, the suit itself was inspired by Space X’s new suits. What Richard Scarry managed to do so well is really get a huge animal head into the helmet, which is something I failed to do and will do better in my next attempt.
There is a principle here of choosing to exaggerate or highlight the important aspects and the face of the fox is defiantly more important than the plain space suit.
Format update:
By now you will understand that the format of this substack changes regularly while the content stays pretty much the same. Here’s how I think of it, you’re here for the sauce, that’s one thing that you will always get, some times I’l squirt it out and serve it to you in a saucer, other times it might come in a packet, or maybe even the bottle.
For the most part, the format solve my part of the equation, how do I get the sauce to you.
Anyway, all that to say: new plan, daily prompts now come in the daily blog (Ugly Work), I’ll send a reminder in the weekly newsletter which will focus on a micro lesson. I think this week’s lesson will be about distilling ideas.
You can either,
