After my morning pages, coffee, and walk with kid, as I prepare do draw the cover of my 10th book, I review my notes.
How to Draw a Children’s Book Cover
Eye-catching silhouettes Create clear, simple shapes that are easily recognizable. Kids should be able to identify main elements quickly.
Vibrant colors Use a bright, appealing color palette. Don't be afraid of contrast, but keep it cheerful and age-appropriate.
Focused composition Limit elements to avoid clutter. One main focal point often works best for young audiences.
Character focus If there's a main character, make them prominent and expressive. Facial expressions are key for connecting with kids.
Playful typography Integrate the title creatively. Make it part of the scene if possible, but ensure it's still easily readable.
Hint at the story Include subtle elements that hint at the book's theme or plot to make the reader curious.
Age-appropriate style Adjust complexity and detail based on the target age group. Simpler for younger kids, more intricate for older ones.
Inviting atmosphere Create a mood that makes kids want to open the book. Think wonder, fun, or cheerful chaos.
Hidden elements Consider adding small details kids can discover upon closer inspection. Hide a tiny mouse or a special object.
Consistency with interior Ensure the cover style matches the illustrations inside to set correct expectations.
Scalability Design with various sizes in mind - it should look good as a thumbnail and full-size.
White space Don't overcrowd. Leave some breathing room to make the important elements stand out.
Additional Notes:
Test your cover with actual kids if possible.
Consider how it looks on a bookshelf among other titles.
Think about parents too - they're often the ones buying the book.
Stay true to your style while meeting the publisher's needs.
Keep this list handy and refer back to it when starting new cover projects.
