The biggest hack to habit forming is probably changing your environment. I’ve been drawing for fun first thing in the morning, going from my sketchbook, to an A3 sheet of paper.
The thing that has allowed me to make this leap is setting up the space for it.
First I clear a shelf for nothing but art materials. The effort to setup and find everything I need to get started, is enough to destroy any habit, conversely an empty space is inviting. So I made a space for leaving active art materials.
And I cleared a surface to work.
Now, instead of reaching for my phone in the morning. I come to this space. And make some work for enjoyment.
Thinking out loud.
Thinking on a page.
Nothing pretty or fancy here, maybe seeds of ideas and corners of emerging patterns. At the moment it’s just building a habit of drawing for enjoyment. And of enjoying drawing.
